Everything you need to know about Storage Tanks and Indirect Storage Tanks!  Pictures, reviews, insider tips, and all the info an old plumber can conjure up dumped into one page.

First things first.   Both Storage Tank water heaters and Indirect Storage Tank water heaters both work by storing hot water that is created from a boiler in some sort of “storage tank”.

A Storage Tank hot water heater works by storing the hot water that is created from the boilers “tankless coil” (a small camber) in a bigger vessel.

A Indirect Storage Tank hot water heater works by storing hot water created from a (independent heating zone) off the boiler in a storage vessel.

Some facts about both storage tank water heaters and indirect water heaters.

An indirect storage tank is more expensive than a storage tank.

When doing a replacement, the storage tank and indirect storage tanks require the same skills and a similar amount of time to install.

When installing a new indirect water heater to an existing heating system is can be quite expensive.

When adding a new Storage water heater to an existing heating system it can be reasonable.

When your current water heater breaks you usually want to go back with the same type of  water heater for the replacement.

So what do you have now?

If there is no water heater, or hot water storage tank of any kind next to your boiler, and any hot water heater anywhere in your home you must have have a Tankless Coil running off the boiler, which provides your home with it’s domestic hot water. (Domestic hot water is hot water used for shower, sinks, aka domestic needs)  Tankless coils don’t provide much hot water due to it’s small camber/ water capacity within the boiler.   Tankless coils run out even faster in the winter months because the water enters the boiler much colder, and the boiler has the added responsibility of heating your home.   A good idea is to add a Storage Tank such as the SuperStor GL-50 to the system.  The tankless coil will still create the hot water for you homes domestic needs, but instead of no storage and the boiler turning on every time you need a small or large amount of hot water the Storage Tank will vastly increase the amount of hot water stored, which in turns vastly reduces the amount of energy used/ oil wasted because the boiler only needs to turn on a few times a day to keep the super insulated tank hot.  Storage tanks added to boiler heating systems with tankless coils provide endless amounts of hot water and saves you big money off your oil bill at the same time.  Adding a new Storage Tank to an existing water heating system is always great idea as long as there is a location for the storage tank near the boiler.  Storage tanks provide more hot water, and reduces the amount of energy by storing more hot water, and allowing the boiler to “not turn on” every time you need a small amount of hot water.

If you have a indirect storage tank, you likely have a 40, 50, 60 gallon tank of hot water very close to your boiler.  You will also be able to clearly see some copper pipes leaving the boiler and entering the Indirect Storage tank hot water heater.   The Indirect storage tank uses the boiler to create the hot water it stores like the tankless coil, but unlike the tankless coil the boiler has an independent zone off the heating system from the boiler.  Where the tankless coil is a small chamber in a special boiler.

Pictures….   The big visual differences between storage tanks and indirect storage tanks is with a indirect water heater there is no circulator pump directly on, or next to the tank.   With a storage tank there is a circulator pump either directly on top of the hot water piping above, or directly next to the tank near the bottom, or side, depending on the manufacturer.  (For example Thermaflow storage tanks have the circulator pump directly on top of the tank,and the Superstor models has the pump at the bottom)   Indirect water haters use the boilers main circulator pump(s) and an independent zone valve connected to a thermostat which tells the zone valve to open, which in turns sends hot water to the indirect storage tank, which in turn makes the boiler to kick on to satisfy the hot water demand.

The main engineering differences between indirect water heaters, and storage tanks is.
Storage tanks are normally single walled tanks because they just hold hot water created from the tankless coil which is itself is a separate chamber from the boiler.
Indirect water heaters are some times double walled like the Weil Mclain Ultra, or have a separate heating coil within them, which is why they are more expensive.  Indirect water heaters have the added responsibility of keeping the Domestic hot water separate from the homes Heating system water.

Quick facts.
Normal newer boilers do not have tankless coils, they are sized for indirect water heaters.
Boilers with tankless coils are more expensive than regular boilers without them.
The only new boilers that can come with a tankless coil are Oil Fried Boilers.
Natural Gas & Propane powered boilers have will have a indirect water heaters with them.

Extra Info.
Because Indirect Storage water heaters require a separate zone of the heating system, the boiler must be powerful enough for the extra load.
This is can be a problem if you are planning to add a indirect storage tank to a heating system, while eliminating a traditional oil, gas, or electric “tank type” water heater.   Adding a indirect storage tank, and getting rid of a more costly water heater for your domestic needs is a great idea, but only if your boiler is big enough to handle the extra load.  Adding extra load to a boiler not big enough to handle it could mean a cold house in the coldest months of the winter.   To find out if your boiler is big enough to add a indirect storage tank, just as your plumber.  A plumber can call a plumbing supply house and call in the boilers serial number.  The supply house can pull up the info, and figure out how many BTU’s the current boiler produces, how many BTU’s an Indirect water heater will add to the load, and if your current boiler can handle it.

If you have a bad tankless coil, you can abandon it and go with something else.
If you boiler is big enough you can abandon it, and add a indirect storage tank.
You can abandon it and go with something entirely different from a traditional storage tank and install a tankless water heater,  or maybe a Heat Pump water heater.

There are a few key factors to what a good idea is for your home, and unfortunately NO one particular website will be able to tell you!
The only way to figure out what the best replace is for your tankless coil is to have a honest plumber take a look at what you have and give you some ideas to think about.

Determining factors to what the best water heater replacement are:
What kind of fuel is heating the water currently, and what can you go to if their is a lower option available to oil burning heating products.
What are do you live in?   Homes in the North East have more things to worry about that add to cost, then water heaters in warm location.
What is your most import goal?  If you live in a condo, space might be a great idea for going tankless in a townhouse.
Do you have a boiler, or hot air furnace?

How big is your home?  Depending on what size home you have, and how much water needs to be heating will determine what types of water heaters you should look at.  Smaller homes might look at Rheem for a tankless water heater, where a larger home should look at the Eternal hybrid tankelss IMO.
Is there a deck in your back yard off the rear of the home?  Tons of windows, garage doors,  or less than 10 feet between your neighbors property line and your home?  All these things need to be taken into consideration when a consultation for a tankless water heaters takes place as well as local building and safety codes (which can differ  state to state &  town to town.)

That’s why you should have a water heating expert provide you with a few couple ideas for your next water heater replacement.  Today there is many choices for nearly every home in America.  The water heating industry has introduced many new energy efficient products over the past ten years, and there are many more to come in the near future.

Tankless coils are usually always the worst way to heat water for domestic needs unless you have small demand.  (2 people max within the home)
New boilers with tankless coils are 400-500 more expensive than a regular boiler without a tankless coil.   You are better off putting that money towards an indirect storage tank, even though the installation labor will be more for the storage tank.  The indirect storage tank w boiler is much more efficient than a boiler with a tankless coil.

When you have a tall rear or side vented oil fired water heater, such as the ford oil fired water heater the Bock 50ES could be a good fit.
The vent height depends on whether or not you need to go back with a side/ rear vented water heater again.
Just because you have a rear, or side vented oil fired water heater, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to back with another one for your next oil fried water heater.   Side or rear vent oil fired water heater are more expensive, and there are less of them available, so you really don’t want one unless you their is no way to fit a “normal” top vented oil fired water heater in the location it needs to be in.
