Selecting a tankless water heater for a home or business located in “cold winter environments” will likely be a different choice than places located a warm winter areas.

*Important Cold weather consideration to remember when selecting a tankless water heater*

Homes in cold winter environments have very cold water entering the home during the winter so these homes need the most powerful units. Power is determined by the amount of hot water they can produce. The most important thing to remember while researching tankless water heaters is to check there “temperature rise”, which means, how much water (in gallons) is produced (per minute) after raising the incoming (cold water) to the desired temperature of (120 degrees). For example. In Springfield Mass or Boston the incoming water is around 40 degrees when it enters the home in January. In order to get the desired 120 degrees we need a product that can create at least an 80 degree temperature rise. (Not all products can produce a 80 degree rise) The more powerful tankless water heaters that can, but you then need to observe how many gallons are produced at that temperature rise. (You will want as much hot water per minute you can get.) 4-5 gallons of hot water per minute at a 80 degree temperature rise which the Eternal can produce is pretty much as good as you can get without paring two units together, which is possible for high end products like Eternal, Navien, & Noritz. Keep in mind A modern shower head uses 2.3- 2.5 gallons of water per minute, so a tankless heater producing 4.5-5 gallons a minute should be able to cover 2 showers at the same time, or one shower and everything else (laundry, dishes, brushing teeth, etc) which is necessary for large families.

Large families and homes will more 3 bathrooms or more will most certainly need the most powerful, and possibly pairing 2 units together in order to provide the home with ample hot water. Large homes = long water lines, more plumbing fixtures, jacuzzi tubs, and multiple shower heads, together will require many gallons of water per minutes.

If you only have one bathroom you won’t need a tankless to produce 4 or 5 gallons of hot water, ever. The most you can possibly use is 2.5 for one shower head and another gallon or so per minute for washing dishes. For a home with only 1 bathroom a tankless heater like a Bosch, or Rheem will get the job done for a lower price than a Eternal or Navien will. However like all non-condensing tankless water heaters, (the less expensive units) require the most expensive vent piping, so they should always be installed right on an outside wall.

800-524-4280 / 203-376-5208

Has your basement flooded before? If your basement flooded once it can flood again, 4 feet of water in the basement means a conventional boiler is completely under water, 1-2 feet of water means all the electronics are under water and either way you are not getting heat and likely the unit is trash. Tankless, wall hung boilers can be installed high off the ground, far above most flooding conditions.

Currently have a sum pump? They don’t offer enough protecting against big storms. Most run on electricity and large storms usually knocks out the local power. Even battery back up systems only last a couple days. Getting the a tankless heating system installed on a wall 4 feet off the ground is the best way to protect your investment from even the biggest storms.

What’s the best way to protect a boiler or water heater from a flood?
Get it off the ground!
High efficiency wall hung options are more than a good idea, there are the only choice. Long term savings on gas expenses is one thing, endless hot water is great, but wall hung boilers are compact, up to 99% efficient and long lasting but only when installed 100% correctly. High efficiency boilers and tankless water heaters can sometimes only be a few thousand more than old fashion cast iron boilers. The energy savings & rebates will make up for the diffidence, and the fact that is can be installed off the floor protects it from water. When installed properly wall hung boilers can last 30 years or more.

Who installs wall hung boilers and water heaters in CT? We do. We are here to get your wall hung water heaters & boiler installed correctly the first time.

Where do we work? From Greenwich to Guilford and every town in between we want to bid for your water heater and boiler replacement.

We try our best to promote all the high quality water heaters on the market today. We might be a little late mentioning the Quiteside line of tankless water heaters & duel purpose boiler- water heaters. Better late than never.

Ever taken a cold shower? Ever wanted to spend an extra 5 minutes in the shower but the water is getting colder? Ever wanted to reduce your gas utility bill? Now you can with the Quietside Tankless Water Heater. Quietside tankless water heaters are Energy Star approved and one of the leaders in condensing tankless water heaters sold in North America. Conceived 5 years ago, and refined through a rigorous testing program, these tankless water heaters are at the pinnacle of performance and efficiency, producing at 12% higher efficiency than even the current Energy Star standard tankless water heaters. High efficiency is only one of the benefits.

In the Greater NYC area, CT, NJ or PA? If so give us a call for a estimate on the quiteside.

Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island, Westchester, White Plains- New York.

If you’re in Atlanta, Maryland, VA Beach, Philly, Pittsburgh, Detroit, or W- Houston we can recommend a water heating expert near you.

Exactemp Water Control

Performance without control is useless. The Quietside tankless water heater uses our revolutionary Exactemp control to keep the delivered water temperature within 2°F of the set point at all times. Three temperature sensors measure the tankless water temperatures throughout the unit. The first measures the incoming water temperature. This information together with the actual flow rate of water through the tankless water heater is fed to the microprocessor, allowing the tankless water heater to calculate the performance required from the gas valve. The second temperature sensor monitors the tankless water temperature leaving the S Line Heat Exchangers. This is always 10 to 20°F higher than the required set point, allowing the Bypass Temperature control valve to open and bleed just the right amount of the cold incoming water into the leaving water to blend it down to within 2°F of the temperature set point on the remote controller. The last temperature sensor measures the delivered tankless water temperature just prior to the water leaving the unit. This ensures that the water temperature at the shower or faucet is an “Exactemp”.

Easy Installation

Tired of trying to work out the venting arrangements for a tankless water heater?
Wish you had installed the Isolation Valve kit for easy servicing?
Can’t work out what you need with all the accessories listed by our competition?

Quietside’s tankless water heater solves these problems for you. The S Line Heat Exchangers reduces the flue gas temperatures to approximately 130°F allowing the use of Schedule 40 PVC (SLC636 in Canada) flue and intake piping. Up to 45 equivalent Feet of 3” or 4” venting with a maximum of 3 elbows can be used to vent these units. Not only is Schedule 40 PVC (SLC636 in Canada) simple to work with, it attaches directly to both the vent connections on the units and to the termination kit (provided). It is also a fraction of the cost of the Stainless venting required on other Tankless units. No longer does the venting cost as much as the tankless water heater. Easy, quick, low cost, and hassle free venting can be done both vertically and sidewall. Everybody agrees that using an Isolation Valve kit is the best way to install a Tankless Water Heater. So does Quietside, however to make it the standard, Quietside is happy to provide an Isolation Valve kit, plus ASME Pressure Relief valve with every tankless water heater. Servicing and Maintenance just got a whole lot easier. Confused with all the accessories available for these Tankless units? Quietside provides the Termination kit and the Isolation Valves with the unit. The only accessory you need to worry about is our easy to install LP gas conversion kit. .Don’t forget: The Quietside tankless water heater is now backed by our 12 year Heat Exchanger and 5 year Parts warranty, plus Technical Support and training programs recognized as some of the best in the industry.

What’s inside the Quietside tankless water heater ?

With features such as our unique S-Line Heat Exchangers, Exactemp Technology, a Modulating Gas Valve, an innovative Microprocessor that controls all of water heater’s functions and the ability to use Schedule 40 PVC (SLC636 in Canada) venting materials over stainless steel, the Quietside tankless water heater is not your ordinary Tankless. . .

PVC Venting

With the S Line Heat Exchangers, the flue gas exiting the
Quietside tankless water heater is reduced to approximately 130°F from the 300° plus
of “normal” tankless water heaters. In addition to the gains
in performance and efficiency, this allows the use of Schedule
40 PVC (SLC636 in Canada) vent materials reducing the
time and cost of installing the tankless.

S-Line Heat Exchangers

Quietside’s unique use of the S Line dual heat exchangers
maximizes efficiency and minimizes noise levels. With the
latent or wet recuperative heat exchanger mounted at an
offset above the primary heat exchanger the flue gas is
forced to travel in an S pattern maximizing heat transfer
and increasing the product performance and efficiency.

Gas Valve

To provide hot water at the required temperature over a
wide variety of flow rates, the gas valves used in the tankless
units have a turn down ratio of 8:1, controlled by the built-in
microprocessor. This technology is the first step in
performance and a stable delivered water temperature

Microprocessor

To ensure the unit is operating at peak performance and
efficiency a microprocessor is used to control all of the tankless water heaters
functions. Utilizing 10 sensors throughout the unit, the
microprocessor is constantly monitoring operations, and will
provide self diagnostic error codes in the unlikely event of a
failure occurring.

Priority Water Temperature Controller

Priority Temperature control allows dual hot water set points to be used in a single house. The Priority controller for the Quietside Tankless Water Heater can override the standard set point allowing for warmer or colder water to be used. For example adult bathing vs children, laundry vs bathing, etc. Both controllers are installed on the system and the priority button is used to override the existing set point.

Company History.
Founded in 1998 with headquarters in California, Quietside imports and manages equipment sales to HVACR wholesale distributors throughout Canada and the US. Quietside focuses on products that are accepted worldwide yet niche markets within North America. By Providing the distributors a wide range of related products from a single source, Quietside becomes a value added supplier. The success of this approach has increased opportunities with our current manufacturers and has increased inquiries from potential partners, continuing to expand Quietside’s presence and value to the thirteen hundred distributor locations currently being served across North America. Quietside has emerged as a leader in niche product markets due to a commitment to excellence. Quality products are only the beginning in Quietside’s pursuit of excellence. Quietside leads the way in product availability, hands-on technical training and competitive sales programs. Quietside has successfully led the way in establishing ductless mini-split type air conditioning as an accepted option rather than just a niche product.

Did you know water heaters account for up to 25 percent of the total utility usage in most homes, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. They are second only to heating and cooling as a major cost. While the newest generation of energy-efficient water heaters can make a big dent in this expense, it can get complicated to sort through the many different types of new highly efficient options like tankless, heat pump, solar & geothermal systems. Even new conventional water heater makers offer “more efficient” options to the old standard gas and standard electric heaters. With dozens of different manufacturers‘ for each type of water heater and the very similar competing claims, figuring out what’s the best water heater type, brand, & size for your home or business can be a daunting task.

Wasting & Saving $$$. A standard electric water heater is the least efficient water heater in areas of high electric rates like the North East & California. A tankless coil running off an oil fired boiler is horrible waste of heating oil, oil fired water heaters use much less than tankless coils but are very expensive (2-3K) to replace and only last ten years which is a terrible waste of money. So what’s the most efficient water heaters? Which ones last the longest? What is a good fit for your home?

Hands down the most efficient water heating systems are the following.
#1) Professional Solar systems can reduce the water heating bill by 80% with good Southern exposure, but not all homes have roofs facing South and they cost $8,000+ to have installed.
#2) Geothermal systems can make a ridiculous difference on the heating and cooling bills but the system can cost $20,000K +. These 2 options are not practical for most home owners needing a water heater replacement so we will not be spending much time on these systems. However when building a home, incorporating this expense into the loan does make complete sense. Adding an extra 8 – 20K will cost you $40- $100 a month extra in a mortgage, but the savings will be 2-3 times that amount which equals instant savings from day one and for every day there after. That’s a better return on investment than any high preforming mutual fund and as utility prices rise so does your savings.
#3) Tankless water heaters. (The most popular high efficiency water heaters in the world) Great for many different installation applications.
#4) Heat pump water heaters. (The newest high efficiency product to the world) Great for 2 specific installation types.

The most realistic high efficient water heaters replacements for the vast majority of homes are gas Tankless water heaters or electric Heat pump water heaters.

(Part 1) Tankless Water Heaters.

When is a tankless water heater a good fit for a home?
Whenever a person or family wants or needs unlimited hot water, valuable space savings, energy savings, or a product that will last 2-3 times that of conventional water heaters. Tankless water heaters are for anyone that wants the most environmentally responsible option.
How much will I save?
Truthfully a gas tankless water heater replacing a gas conventional water heater will not drastically reduce your gas bill, say a couple hundred a year max. A tankless can save you a lot of money when going from a conventional electric, oil fired, tankless coil, power vented water heater, to a tankless. Tankless products often last 2-3 times longer than conventional water heaters which is where the big long term savings is over any conventional tank type water heater.
When does it make sense to install a tankless water heater?
A) They make a lot of sense when they replace a power vent water heater, because power vent water heaters are expensive and don’t last long, plus you already have a hole drilled through your house the tankless can use & and electrical outlet near by. B) If you had an “all oil”or “all electric” home and now have gas service on the side of the house a gas tankless water heater is a great way to go. C) If you have propane service Tankless water heaters should always be considered especially it’s time to replace a oil fired water heater because oil fired water heaters are extremely expensive (2-3K) and they only last 10+ years! D) If your current water heater is dying it’s time to explore putting that money towards a high efficient, long lasting product like a quality gas tanklesss water heater.
When you need extra SPACE.
Live in a condo with a conventional 50 gallon water heater or a 75 gallon power vent water heater? When you live in a condo going from a big tank to a tankless will get you an entire new close worth of space to use. That can mean the difference from your bicycle being locked up out side or being in your utility closet. The extra space can justify the extra expense for a tankless in a town house for many owners. (Having a contractor build you a new closet would cost the same or more than a new tankless installation would, and would take 10+ times longer. Installing a tankless heater would make a lot of sense if your in a condo or town house and you really want extra storage space)
How do tankless water heaters all work?
By heating the water instantaneously hot has is passes over the heat exchanger.
What do tankless heaters cost to have installed?
Most plumbers charge from $750 for an easy installation taking one plumber 1 day to $1,500 for more difficult installations requiring 2+ plumbers for a full or multiple days.
Are any of them a good fit for your home?
Most likely.

You want to know what the best tankless water heater for your home and how much it will cost to be installed?
Unfortunately it’s not that easy for me. The location of your home makes a big difference in what products you can choose. You will defiantly need to find a plumber in your local area for his advice. In Arizona, Texas or Florida (warm weather winters) a tankless unit can be smaller in size & power, they can be installed outside which makes venting it no concern, extra materials are few, installation easy and usually affordable for most mid income families. In Connecticut, Boston, Minneapolis (cold winter environments) the tankless must be installed inside in a some what warm place and the unit should have built in freeze sensors & freeze preventing features. Installing these units within a home leads to more complicated installations, 3-5 times of effort, twice as much additional materials, and the most expensive units. Homeowners in the South may have prices almost half as what people in the North could pay, but it makes perfect sense, the units are smaller and the installations are nothing alike.

If you currently have natural gas in your home. A gas fired Tankless water heater such as the Etenal, Navien, Noritz and many others offer great energy savings, offer substantial space savings, last 2-3 times as long as conventional tank type heaters, provide endless hot water, qualify for all federal and local rebates. The professional installation for high end products will likely cost some where between $3,000-$4,500 fully installed depending on brand, size, amount of gas piping, and installation requirements to meet all local building codes. *Remember depending on what state you’re in, you should be able to get $200- $800 back altogether in state & federal rebates and credits from your local energy providers.

If you currently “only have electric”, no gas, no propane. If you have an all electric home thinking about an electric tankless water heater you’re better off going with a heat pump water heater because electric tankless water heaters are not practical for most families in cold winter environments. Electric tankless would need to be paired, or tripled up to provide an entire house with 2 baths enough hot water. Each unit needs (Three) 30 or 50 amp circuit breakers, so 2 or more electric units when running would consume more power than your entire house can provide in most cases. Large scale electrical jobs can be very expensive and won’t be practical for most homes. * Heat pump water heaters offer 50% savings over standard conventional electric water heaters, and their installation is much easier and less expensive because expensive electrical work isn’t needed. **Heat pump water heaters are pretty tall and can not fit in all homes.

In my humble opinion this is a darn good “short list” of new water heaters for you to think about.

First thing to remember I live in Connecticut, our business is primarily in the Tri-state area and New England. I only deal with the best products because we only install the most powerful units up here. We simply do not want any call backs or disappointed clients so we only work with informed home and business owners and install the best products. These are just my opinions, but should be paid close attention to if you live in a cold winter environment, especially in a home with 2+ bathrooms.

My favorite gas tankless water heaters on the market today are.
1) Eternal
2) Navien
3) Rheem

In my opinion if you live in a cold winter environment these are your top three options and why.

1) Eternal Hybrid- Large demand. (Most gallons per minute at lowest temperature rise.) Most efficient @ 98-99%. 2 sizes. Most expensive. Industry leading warranty @ 20 year heat exchange & 5 year total unit.
Units cost $1,800- $2,200 Professional installation $1,000- $1,250. Additional parts $300 – $500

2) Navien- Medium demand. Extremely efficient @ 95-98% Many sizes.
Reasonably priced. 10 years heat exchanger & 5 years parts.
Units cost from $1,000 -$2,000. Professional installation $1,000 – $1,500. Additional parts $300- $700
Remember* (These units really shouldn’t be installed on a well system, will require protection, and yearly maintenance to protect heat exchanger)

3) Rheem- Smaller demand. Least efficient @ 85-88% efficient. Many sizes.
Lowest price point. Solid 12 year warranty heat exchanger & 5 years on parts.
Units cost from $700 – $1,400. Professional installation $750 – $1-500. Additional parts is $300- $700
Remember* (These really must be installed on outside wall within the home to avoid the very high expense of vent piping) (These units really shouldn’t be installed on a well system, will require protection, and yearly maintenance to protect heat exchanger)

What’s with the extreme price differences between tankless water heaters?
The price between the different units are vast, small demand exterior mounted tankless water heaters such as Bosch, Rinnai have entry models as little as $500, while the most powerful/ best warrantied products like Eternal are near $2,000. (Why does a BMW cost more than a Toyota?)

Do I really need the best tankless water heater on the market?
Probably not, but that all depends on what you want it to accomplish, where you live, how many people are in the house, and your life style, and where the unit needs to be installed. Do you need a product that uses PVC venting? Do you want a product with the capability of truly un limited hot water for your Jacqui tub and the rest of your entire house at the same time, or just enough hot water for one shower at a time? Just like anything else in life the best, most expensive products (appliances, cars, electronics, etc) come with the most features, have superior performance, have the best warranties & also cost more than other products.

Tankless water heater Maintenance. Maintenance is another expense you need to calculate in your budget. Yes the Eternal hybrid tankless is expensive but it requires zero maintenance. Saving you another 200 a year in heat exchanger flushing servicing. Normal tankless water heaters on well water can require flushing multiple times per year.

*Important weather consideration to remember.*
In order to get the desired 120 degrees we need a product that can create a 80 degree temperature rise. Keep in mind A modern shower head uses 2.3- 2.5 gallons of water per minute, so a tankless heater producing 4.5-5 gallons a minute should be able to cover 2 showers at the same time, or one shower and everything else (laundry, dishes, brushing teeth, etc) which is necessary for medium to large families.

Will I be disappointed with a tankless water heater?
Choosing a under sized/ under powered tankless with 100% certainty will lead to a less than desirable showering experience. When your nice hot shower runs luke warm or the pressure bounces around due to hot water being pulled away as it’s used else where in the home don’t say I didn’t warn you. Don’t cheap out on the installation either. A guy in a pick up truck and a bucket of tools not experienced with tankless installations should not install them. Don’t let a too good to be true price come back to haunt you for years. If you live in a cold winter environment you can not cut corners on anything, not the unit, the installation, and you better choose a quality plumbing company that is experienced installing them or you will likely have some problems.

Flooding concerns.
If you live in an area with flooding you might have no choice but to go with a tankless wall hung water heater to get it off the floor to protect it from mother nature.

Power outage concerns for tankless water heaters.

What’s it cost to get our Navien repairmen in New York to your home or business? $200 flat rate for us to show up and diagnose the problem. After we spend some time and energy figuring out what is wrong and what the solution will be, we’ll be able to tell you what the repair will cost. Think that’s unreasonable? Then please don’t waste our time. We are too busy, New York is too expensive and we will not invest our time if you cannot make a small investment in us. Indeed many people are in need of our help and more than willing to pay. We might be the best Naiven repair company in NYC simply because we are the one of a very few. We have been fixing Navien’s since they first came in New York almost 10 years ago, that means no matter what the problem is we will figure out the problem on our first visit and have the ability to fix it.

Don’t waste your money! Remember, spending less with another plumbing company not certified & experienced fixing Navien tankless water heaters will be a total waste of time and money. Sure you can spend less on a service fee but you’ll have some Bozo show up, take off the Navien’s cover and tell you he can’t figure it out, and still charge you a service fee! Paying once is always better than paying twice for the service you need. If you agree call us @ 800-524-4280
We have all heard it before, the truth can hurt. Especially if you spent good money on the original Navien CH-240 installation with a plumber you had a “good feeling” about. Unfortunately Navien CH-240’s (just like all tankless combination boilers) are the most complicated / in-depth heating systems on Earth. The bigger the application, the more zones you have, and taller the building the more challenging the installation becomes. All manufactures of combi boiler/ water heaters offer specailed installation classes because they all acute knowledge, skill & experience for their proper installation. If you just had a Navien CH-240 installed and it’s not working properly it most likely wasn’t installed properly. Invite us over and learn exactly what the problem is and it’s solution.

How do I avoid multiple plumbing service fees when trying to fix a Navien tankless water heater?
Start off with a factory trained/ experienced Navien repair plumbing company from the start.

Who should I call to fix my Navien tankless water heater?
If you are in NYC, or CT call us. 800-524-4280

Are Navien Tankless water heaters quality products?
Yes, they are some of the best products in the world, but only when installed properly.

Is my Navien still under warranty?
Most likely.

Will Navien cover my repair bill if it’s under warranty?
A) If the original installation wasn’t done properly they will not pay anything. Why would they? Navien did nothing wrong if you chose a plumber that didn’t know what he was doing and installed it poorly.
B) If the Navien unit has defective or worn out parts that need to be replaced Navien will send the parts for free. They will not pay for the total cost of labor, but may kick in a slight amount. ($40 -$60)

Not too many plumbers know how to. Not too many plumbers want to know how to fix them.
Fixing tankless water heaters is a horrible waste of time for un-experienced plumbers. Think about it. In major cities plumbers charge 200-300 to fix a toilet which takes no skill whats so ever, less than ten minutes and the parts are right on the truck.
Fixing a tankless water heater takes serious skill to diagnosis most of the parts need to be ordered, it takes experience & specialized training to make the repair. The entire process could take 1 or many hours, possible more than one visit if waiting for parts.

What does it take to be Naien certified repairmen?
First you need to be a licensed & insured plumber with over all knowable about tankless water heaters. You need to express interest to your supplier that you want to be Navien factory trained.
Navien invites to the the offical factory training at the Navien training factory in New Jersey. After completing the multiple day training you need to buy Navien repair kits & tools.
You get a certificate in the mail. Then you are a Navien Factory trained rep, (but not an experienced one.)

Another happy client.

What’s it take to be an experienced Navien repair company?
Experience. After fixing a few dozen of them you can call yourself experienced.

How many Navien’s have we fixed?
Many. After being offical Navien repairmen for a few years it’s our opinion that about half of all Navien CH-240’s are not installed 100% properly because about half of all the ones we have seen needed to be completely re-installed.

How long does it take for a Navien to show signs of needing a repair?
A) If you’re currently having problems with a Navien, but it worked perfectly fine for 2-3 years it’s likely the unit needs to be serviced, maintained, cleaned out.
B) If you’re Navien never seemed to work properly, it made loud banging sounds, heat was hit or miss etc, water hot & cold it’s most likely it wasn’t installed properly from day one.

We service the complete Navien product line.
