Here’s the thing.  In most cases the fix is VERY EASY!!!   I made this page to help you out.

There is a problem with the (thermal coupling), and it only needs to be replaced, possibly just cleaned.  Any plumber with basic skill can do this.  Even if your plumber doesn’t know about this solution we do, we deal with hundreds of water heaters a year, many calls for this straight forward fix.  If your AO Smith water heater’s pilot light keep going off call a local plumber (or us) to do the job.

What is a thermal coupling you ask?  In short: A thermal coupling is a small copper sensor connected between the gas control valve to the burner assembly under the water heater.  It has one job, it tells the gas control valve the fire is lit safely and it’s safe to keep on sending gas to the burner.  When the thermal coupling goes bad that message is not being sent and the gas valve and it will turn itself off because it thinks the fire isn’t lit/ the room is filling up with natural gas.  A thermal coupling is a safely device that cannot be jumped/ bypassed, the gas control/ water heater will not work without one.

When a thermal coupling is starting to go bad the heater will start to turn itself off for no reason at all, you relight the heater which gets it working again, but over time it turns itself off over faster durations of times, and eventually the heater will no turn on/ light at all.

This is a great video online about a water heaters.   This video shows exactly how a water heaters works and the science channel takes it a step further by cutting it in half to show exactly what the inside of a traditional tank type water heater looks like.    Natural Gas, Propane Gas, and Oil Fired water heaters all work the same way and look similar to this video.   You get a good look at some parts such as the burner, thermocouple, and spark igniter, but they are not talked about.   The video shows what the Inner Tank Wall looks like, the Flue & Baffle, as well as the Foam Insulation and does explains what each of these does for the heating process.

Most electric, gas, and oil water heaters last 10-12 years.

What are the factors that determine water heater ware and tare?

All water heaters manufactured these days last about 10- 15 years.
There are 5 major factors that impact the longevity of water heaters.  (This list is in no particular order of importance)

1. “Good” or “Hard Water” supplied to the water heater.
2. How many people use it.
3. Is it located in a warm or cold winter environment.
4. If it’s installed correctly.
5. If it’s been maintained.

If you have “good” water and the water heater has been in a lower demand home, (2-3) family members, and you live in a area with “warmer” incoming water supply, such a place as Atlanta Georgia, it was installed correctly, you flushed it our once every couple years, your water heater could very likely last 15 years or longer.

If you have “hard water,”  live in a high hot water demand home (4+ family members), and you live in an area with Cold incoming water supply such as Boston Mass your water heater might only last 10 years.

If your water heater wasn’t installed correctly, or the water heater was defective from the factory a water heater will start leaking within it’s first 1-3 years after its installation.

If your water heater is defective from the factory it will only last a couple years.

Why did water heaters last so much longer in the past?

Back when raw materials were accessible and relatively inexpensive and the water heating businesses were independently owned,  water heater manufacturing companies made products to the best of their ability so their products would be better than their competitors.   This was TRUE American capitalism at it’s best within the water heating industry.  Water heater manufacturing companies would build the best products they could in order to develop a reputation of being the best, and every company offered fine products.  Water heaters from yesteryear’s were made of the finest materials America had to offer such as  copper, quality steel and solid brass.  These water heaters would regularly last 20-30 years, some over 40+ years.

Fast forward to this current world we live in where huge mega companies can be in business making very little profit as long as the stock price doesn’t crash, market share is more important that market reputation, and big budget advertising prevents you from even knowing what a quality water heater is.   We have large home improvement selling and installing water heaters, and sadly homeowners buying them.  Stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Sears and other large department stores are building and selling water heaters made of thin steel, plastic, little brass, and no copper.  I know this for a fact because I have installed or removed thousands of them.  Water heaters have remained relatively cheep over the years because of these production changes, but the longevity of them had been greatly reduced.   Unfortunately most reputable water heater manufactures started to copy the large department store’s business model and offer products at a similar price point.   These companies had to make changes, because whom is going to buy a water heater for twice what a department store can offer you at the same warranty, right?  Many manufactures who stuck to their guns went out of business because sadly many Americans gotten used to getting everything as cheep as humanly possible and forgetting about value and quality to a large extent.

Why blame Wallstreet?   I don’t blame them for anything, it’s people that ultimately make decisions about what products to purchase.   Wall Street plays an important part in America and the world, and even I can’t say I wouldn’t like a little Wall Street funding to get this website and company Nation wide.  Wall Street gave the discount home improvement stores their capital to start.   Wallstreet also gave cheep money to some water heating manufacturing companies like A.O Smith, and Rheem, which indirectly lead to dozens of other good manufactures going out of busienss because they simply could not build water heaters the public would buy at the price point the well funded companies could offer.  Large hedge fund companies own plumbing companies like rooter rooter, and Ben Franklin plumbing companies.  I don’t hate Wallstreet, I have my Scott trade account open but Wallstreet many times helps companies with inferior products or services rise the the level of world domination while companies that actually create better products get bought and spit out, or left to die by the way side.

What is a water heater that will last the longest?

Any water heater bought at a stand alone plumbing supply store with likely outlast the same type of water heater bought at a large home improvement store because they are built better and are handled with extreme care.  Water heaters that last the test of time are water heaters that have Special Features, such as, they are made of Stainless Steel, or a water heater tank that comes with Upgraded Anode Rods, (which protect the inner tank wall)
Almost all quality water heater manufacturers offer Stainless Steal versions of their entry level Glass Lined model water heaters and storage tanks, or upgraded Anode Rod kits that increase the longevity and warranties on the units.

Water heaters can last longer and do when they are pampered, handled with care, and installed properly by plumbers like us.

Water heaters are fragile so only buy one from a quality plumbing supply house and have a trusted water heating expert install it so you will get as much time as possible.  Don’t buy a water heater at a large department unless you have to, and don’t have the large department store’s plumbing installation service unless you can not find any other local plumbers to do it.   Local plumbers are in many cases able to install the same size water heater for the same price as the large department stores do, but you will get a much better water heater than what you find at the home improvement stores.

Buy a water heater from a large department store and have their “installation team” install it and you might not get as many years as possible.  That’s the bottom line.
