Have you heard all that before? Have you seen that on every single website talking about tankless water heater? Yes I know you have. On waterheatinginfo.com we try talking about something, anything new and innovation in the high efficiency water heating industry. Lets talk about a new product offering truly new features that no other tankless water heating manufacturer is offering. Lets talk about Intellihot tankless water heaters.

Why I think the Intellihot is the best tankless water heater on the market in 2012, imo.

http://www.intellihot.com/why-intellihot.html

Endless & Instant Hot Water (Built in pump)

Heating on demand means continuous, never-ending hot water.

Built in pump for recirculation & instant hot water at faucets.

Intellihot & Intelligence

Intellihot’s computer learns and adapts to your lifestyle.

Within a week of use, the unit will know when you are likely to use hot water and it will self programs those times.

During these times, it will automatically heat up water and can bring it up to your faucet (if you have the recirculation system enabled). No programming, no guess work, no wastage.

All Stainless Self cleaning Core

Surgical stainless steel heat exchanger means high quality and long operating life.

Self-cleaning, anti-scaling feature keeps unit running like new.

Remote monitoring

Commercial units can be remotely monitored using our iphone app or via the web.

Remotely trouble shoot and quickly respond to keep your facility running.

Masterless Cascading and Common venting

Each intellihot unit has enough intelligence. Unlike others, there is no single master controller to fail and shut down all units.

Program all units simultaneously from the control panel of any unit.

Easily combine and common vent multiple units.

Individual units can be added or offline for service or shutdown any time.

Precise Temperature

Precise digital temperature controls prevents scalding.

Intellihot water heaters produce a steady temperature at various flow rates.

By now, just about all water heating professionals know the Eternal hybrid line of tankless water heater are a fantastic residential gas fired tankless water heaters. If you’re a contractor that’s purchased one lately you also know they are one of the most expensive lines of residential gas fired tankless water heaters on the market.

Eternal is now offering a $300 contractor rebate to make it a little easier to sell them, or help put a little more money in our pockets depending on how you look at it. Eternal is offering this rebate for all qualified & registered Eternal installers from April 23 – June 15th 2012. This pic (below) is the email I received from Eternal.

I’ve put a decent amount of time promoting Eternal tankless water heaters for our installation company in New York City & CT because they are great products and we have received amazing feedback from our clients with them. To date not one of our Eternal’s have required and service, repairs and negative comments in anyway.

Note: I do not recommend them for multi usage in commercial applications. JS

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have switched companies and have a new company email. Please use xxxxxxxx in the future.

The Rheem HP 40 and HP 50 don’t have the ability to replace the anode. It is however a larger anode rod and we warranty the complete HP for 10 years.

If you ever had an issue with the refridgerant side of the unit or a leak in the tank we replace the complete heater! The GEO Spring will replace the compressor but then you need an HVAC licensed tech and the cost would be much higher than replacing a heater. Sunburst Plumbing had a failure on the GEO and it took three weeks to get a replacement compressor. The Rheem unit was developed in conjunction with the HVAC Division so we have a lot of history.

The Rheem unit has a 2.0 EF compared to a 2.2 EF with the GEO Spring. They are slightly more effiecient but they don’t recover as fast. Rheem uses a double wall heat exchanger with a Taco circulator. The counter flow design recovers faster. The GEO Spring has copper coils the surround the tank and the heat is absorbed through convection. Our feeling was recovery was more important than .2 EF difference. I am sure you are aware but we qualify for a $ 400 rebate from the CT Energy Fund.

From what I have heard we are getting ready to release the next generation of product. Some changes we expect to see are,

New color scheme to match all Rheem products

New sizes

New Controls which will offer more features.

I also attached a line card with other products I now represent. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.
I hope this helps and thank you for your support.

Mark B.

—————————————-

So there you have it.

Congratulations on asking this important question. You just saved thousands in service maintenance, repairs, and many head aches. If you are a representative of a property management company researching the best tankless water heaters for large & commercial applications, you just saved your reputation. J.S-

All tankless water heaters are NOT a good choice for large high efficiency domestic water heating applications!

Water heaters with “conventional” heat exchanges such as Rheem, Rinnai, Navien, Noritz, Lochinvar, Bosch etc all require regular maintenance, not doing so will lead to failing parts within the unit and a heat exchanger that will ware out far sooner than you or the manufacture intended. Avoiding regular maintenance can add up to big unexpected repair expenses down the road.

If you have had a bad installation on an high efficiency heating system and don’t know it- you can kiss your high efficiency heating equipment good bye. If there is hard water issues without the proper filtering equipment, along with NOT being regularly maintained, your high efficiency heating system can fail as quickly as 2 years! A professional heating consultation with our professionals is the perfect way to know your building’s high efficiency heating systems was installation correctly.

This system (pictured below) cost over 400k and is already failing after 2 years, not because the equipment is bad, it’s due to improper installation.

The news we had for this (above-black hat) self made business man in the upper West side- (owners of a very famous upper West side deli) wasn’t good news at all, but it was the news he had to hear and other plumbers couldn’t see. Our inspection helped him recover money spent on the repairs and the 10,000 dollar heat exchanger replacement.

This is not the case with the Intellihot tankless water heater.

The Intellihot tankless water heater’s heat exchanger are 3 times as thick as the closest competitors heat exchanger!

3 times as thick means more than 3 times the strength & durability.

The Intellihot tankless water heater was designed for large applications requiring multiple tankless’ linked together, these locations are but not limited to; Laundry mats, Commerical buildings, Schools, Apartments, Offices, Federal buildings, Car washes, Restaurants, High densidy housing. In my opinion there is only one tankless water heater on the market for commercial tankless water heaters. The Intellihot tankless water heater.

Unlike most tankless water heater manufactures- Intellihot not only says their products are a Good choice for large applications using storage tanks, they say Intellihot tankless water heaters were designed for this exact type of usage.

I heard that right from the product rep and you can review the information online here
http://www.intellihot.com/commercial-configurations.html

Never heard of the Intellihot? That’s because the company is just heating up. However two consecutive product of the year awards do not lie and neither does Intellihots’ industry leading heat exchanger, self learning programming and remote controlling feature, which are all features UN-seen in any other manufactures tankless water heaters. In my opinion and if I can have anything to do with it- the Intellihot tankless water heater product line is about to boil over.

I met the guys from Intellihot at the heating trade show in Januarary. David, like everyone I’ve spoken with at Intellihot have all been extremely knowledgeable and helpful thus far.

Our first Intellihot project. We’re in the middle of selling our first Intellihot proposal; within a large commercial oil to gas conversion we intend to use Intellihot units for the high efficiency domestic water application. We will be using 5 Intellihot tankless units for a combined total of 1.2 million BTU’s in total providing four 120 gallon storage tanks with super efficient hot water for the domestic needs in a high rise upper class building on 7th ave- Time Square Manhattan. This will allow the low pressure steam boil to be turned off during non-heating systems, as well as offers 98% efficiency on the domestic heating side, qualifies for any and all New York City tax free programs, rebates, tax credits and special low financing programs. When we get it there will be plenty of pictures coming. Stay tuned.

Navien installation

The two most important factors on converting to a tankless water heater is how much they will cost to install, and how much they will save you over time.

unit + other parts + labor = True cost.

The Units themselves go for $700 – $2,800 dollars. Small demand units are on the lower end of spectrum and high demand top end units such as the Intellihot, Navien 7 line, Eternal Hybrid and Noritz tankless models are on the higher side. You want the very best you can get because the better units can last 25 years or longer, provide the most gallons per minutes, and qualify in the Federal tax credits and local energy rebate programs.

Many traditional water heater companies have entered the tankless water heater business over the past few years but the technology has been around since the 1950’s and over 50 million tankless water heaters have been installed in homes throughout Japan and Europe since then. The technology has greatly improved over the past few years and some manufactures offer warranties as long as 20 years.

Other parts will be needed with your installation. Valve kit- The valve kit is located directly underneath the unit when installed. It is the feed & return for the water piping that connects the tankless unit to the house. Good ones are made of brass, and include a shut off valve at both the hot and cold side of the unit. Good valve kits will also have a quick connect hook up so you can flush your tank out with a simple garden hose and a bucket. Good ones cost $55 – $85. but worth every penny.

Valve kit, condensate pump, gas, thermostat.

ventilation piping- All units will discharge an exhaust, and you will need piping to get it from the unit to an outside wall, (not near a window or doorway). Most units need to use more expensive vent piping called double walled, B vent, or fasNseal, all are stainless steal vent pipes. This kind of piping is expensive, any where from $35 - $45 per 12- 16 inch piece. $75 – $90 per 3 foot length, $45- $59 per (90 & 45 degree bends). If you need to go across the length of an entire basement or garage, you could be spending almost as much in ventilation piping the the unit itself. The Eternal, Navien and other tankless water heater manufactures have condensing models that require PVC for their exhaust pipe. PVC goes for less than 1 dollar per foot, about 1 – 2 dollars for 90 & 45 degree bends.

Gas pipe modifications. All gas units need either natural gas or propane to work. Your natural gas pressure is set at a steady rate set by your local gas company usually around 3.5 pounds psi. Your unit will need a 3/4inch gas line connecting the unit to the gas piping in the house. If their isn’t any 3/4 tap in spots near by your plumber will have more work, and your wallet will need to open a little wider. All units will require some gas modifications and they are included with your basic installation prices, however if there is no place near the desired installation site to “tap into the house line” your plumber/we, may have to work all the way back to the gas meter, then run a new dedicated line for the tankless water heater. Costing you any where from $300- $1,100 extra dollars depending the length and type of piping used.

- Propane units often require more gas piping because a new gas line needs to be run from the propane tank (threw a wall )with special wall penetrating brackets, back to the tankless water heater’s installation site. If the propane tank is a “brand new set up” a permit will need to be pulled on the gas line, and pressure test passed- this adds more time, energy and dollars to the quote.

Electrical upgrades- If you live in an old house and are thinking about installing a new electric tankless water heater, you might want to think again. Sine the unit instantaneously makes cold water hot, the unit requires a ton of power on demand, and at least (2), often (3)- 40 amp circuit breakers in the service box. If your house doesn’t have enough power, or any room in electrical service box for additional circuit breakers you could need a service upgrade to your electrical system which could cost you more than the tankless installation itself. FYI- Electrical service upgrades go from $1,500- $2,500. If you live in a newer house or have had an electrical upgrade with in the past ten years then you will most likely just need a new electrical line ran from the fuse box to the tankless unit. A licensed electrician must install a new fuse in the service box, and run a line form the service box to the tankless unit. Our electricians charge around from $175 – $350 for a new electrical outlet.

Eternal hybrid tankless installation.

Then you have the Labor. Every licensed plumber I know is charging different prices. Price to install them depending on how long & challenging, or quick & easy the installation will be so it’s very hard for me or any other plumber to tell you what the labor costs will before inspecting the actual installation site. Out door installations (in the South East) can be as little as 500 dollars labor for, and difficult installations in cold weather environments can be 3-4 times that.

All in all, going tankless is usually a great idea, they save space and money on your utilities. However there are many factors that will could effect the installation labor price. Extra gas modifications, drilling 4 inch holes threw solid concrete, etc will impact/ increase the amount of money you will pay on your basic labor costs. Picking the right location for the unit is very important, and there is a good chance that the new tankelss water heater will not be able to be installed exactly where the your old fashion tank is now. It’s even possible that there isn’t any proper location anywhere in your home because of clearance issues with the exhaust fumes being to close to windows, door ways, air conditioning, property lines & local building department code.

How do I know if a tankless water heater is a good fit for my home? The best thing to do when trying to figure out if a tankless water heater is right for your home or building is, find a plumber that offers professional estimates (like we do).

Do plumbers do free estimates for tankless water heaters? Forget looking for a Free estimates! Plumbers who offer free estimates for high efficiency heating products (in a $4 per gallon world) either have nothing to do, or have no idea what they are doing- desperately seeking a job. When making a choice that will result in spending thousands of dollars you want to make sure you get the best service (NOT THE CHEAPEST) from the first meeting, to the quote and well beyond the installation.

Why is there so many negative comments- reviews online about tankless water heaters? High efficiency tankelss water heaters that ARE NOT 100% installed correctly to precise manufactures specifications & following all state & local building codes will cost you A LOT MORE to fix down the road. Paying for an estimate for a true high efficicncy heating expert isn’t a good idea, it’s the best idea and the only way to ensure you get the best service as possible.

Thousands wasted on a BAD installation- Gas company shut it down! re-installation costing 1,200 + materials.

How do I get the lowest tankless water heater installation quote? Don’t try to hard unless you want to become the next victim of “too good to be true” pricing! You will end up paying twice- a lot more than having it done correctly the first time. If you knew how many tankless water heaters our company repairs & re-installs after problems arise about 2 years after the inssal insdtallation, it would blow your mind! Think you are going to get your money back from a plumber, 2 years the installation? NO. You will be stuck with no hot water, already spent good money, and need to spend a lot more on the re-installation or needed attention to pass local building codes.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Navien America, Inc. (”Navien”) has, on its own decision, proactively initiated a recall to replace the Nylon 66 exhaust vent collars with PVC collars on certain tankless water heaters.

The vent collars of the products manufactured by Navien in 2008 were not properly connected to the vent pipes in some cases. In the event pressure is applied, then the vent could separate and break away from the collar. If the vent separates from the vent collar, then this could lead to the risk of carbon monoxide leaks and poisoning if the water heater is located inside the house.

For more information or to schedule a time to have the replacement performed, contact Navien toll-free at (800) 244-8202 Monday through Friday between 8:00a.m to 5:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time or visit Navien’s website at http://navienamerica.com.

Alternatives to standard electric water heaters.

The Heat Pump Water Heater such as the Rheem HP-50 or A.O. Smith Voltex, is a THE high efficiency alternative to the conventional energy sucking heater your used to by offering an incredible 50% energy savings over a standard electric heater. The heat pump water heater also has incredible extra benefit of Dehumidifying the basement (for free) as a by-product of it’s operation.

Where can I find a local knowledgeable high efficiency heat pump water heater installer? If you’re located in Connecticut, the greater NYC area or North New Jersey you already did. 800-524-4280 -Jay S.

The electric heat pump water heater uses half the electricity of what a conventional electric heater uses.

How is a heat pump water heater so efficient? The heat pump water heater moves heat already within the air near the water heater (in the room) to another (in the tank). Rather than creating the heat electrically with 4500 watt electric heating elements found in all electric water heaters sold (in cold winter markets). Note: Less powerful heating elements are in electric water heaters sold in warmer winter locations.

How warm does the surrounding air temperature need to be for a heat pump water heater to work? As long as the air temputer is over 45 degrees the air contains enough heat and the heat pump water heater will work as branded. The warmer the surrounding air is, the more efficient & faster the tank heats up/ recovers.

How much hot water does a heat pump water heater produce? More than any standard electric water heaters in the same “gallon size”. The 50 gallon sized heat pump water heater can produce roughly 75-80 gallons in it’s 1st hour rating, in either ideal heat pump conditions “warm(er) surrounding air”. The 1st hour rating varies from brand to brand.

How does a heat pump water heater work? Just like a refrigerator- but opposite.

Other benefits of a heat pump water heater. A great benefit of the heat pump water heater is you get a free large de-humidifer essentially for free. The DE-humdiafing process happens natural as a by product of the heat pump transferring warm and cool air. One heat pump water heater will keep a large basement nice and dry, year round.

Who installs heat pump water heaters? Plumbers. Plumbers like us. 800-524-4280

Geospring and Whirlpool heat pump water heaters for example are the lowest cost heat pumps. However they do not have removable heat pumps, where as the Rheem/ Ruud does. That means if you have a heat pump break down with a Geo-spring or Whirlpool the entire unit will have to be removed. With 2 completely independent water heating systems even if the heat pump goes down the Rheem HP-50 it’’s heat pump can be removed, tank left installed to home, and the electric elements will provide hot water until the new heat pump is installed on top. This is a very for anyone concerned with “newer technophobe”.
