Are you looking for plumbers that do side jobs? People that offer side jobs for plumbing is a great idea if you need a low price you’re probably thinking. However this can easily cost you more in the long run than you ever though you would save. Will the side job be done quickly? Will the side job be done during normal hours (when plumbing supply stores are open) so it doesn’t drag on for days? Will the side plumbing job be done correctly the first time? Will your “side job plumber” come back again if there is a problem in the future? Will you get a receipt when the plumbing side job is complete? You my friend have a lot to think about. Be sure to put the right person on the job! Many many many home owners like you have been burned by plumbers that do plumbing side jobs.
Don’t get ripped off by someone that says they do plumbing side jobs. You will pay good money for someone that is under qualified, doesn’t deserve the work, and doesn’t know the little things that make experienced plumbers worth the money by saving home owners like you big money performing plumbing repairs/ not plumbing replacements!
Many people have two or more jobs to keep their bills paid on time, saving for college, or to catch up on past bills, medical bill, or maybe saving for a vacation. It makes perfect sense that someone can have more than one profession, but not in all cases. Can your lawyer also be a politician? Yes. Can your real estate agent also own a small florist shop? Yes. These and many other combination make complete sense. However can your local police man also be a plumber? Would a guy that normally is employed as a tree cutter also be a plumber? I don’t know about that.
Why would someone walk away from a high paying, in demand job for something else which requires more hours, and less money? If you go to your local home depot and walk down the plumbing isle, most likely there is a guy in the plumbing section will tell you he is “real plumber” when he’s not working at home depot. lol. How can this be true? Would you work at home depot for 12-13 dollars an hour, when as a plumber you could make more than 2, 3, or 4 times than that amount working as a plumber full time? Probably not. So you have to ask yourself. Does a guy that works in the plumbing department qualify as a quality plumber? In some cases far and few between maybe, and the majority of these people are just trying to make some extra money “on the side” when they tell you they want to do a plumbing job for you.
Unless you like the idea of paying good money for poor workmanship do yourself a favor and stay away from people and companies that do plumbing and drain cleaning “on the side”. We all know the old saying, “You get what you pay for”. Plumbing is no different. Plumbing is no joke. Setting bath tubs, setting shower pans, roughing in new shower valves are just a few tasks that take real skill. Diagnosing plumbing problems, and tricky heating issues are hard to understand and even explain for home owners, and getting the correct answers and a course of action to solve the plumbing problem require decades of on the job training, and encountering these problems first hand in the past to have the answers. Plumbers like Bruce Somers have the experience by being experienced! By encountering, and solving every problem you can possibly imagine in the past already. When your “handy man” or part time plumber says “we need to replace this water heater, and I’ll do it for a few hundred bucks labor”. It may sound like a good deal, but not if you knew that the water heater could be fixed easily for a small fraction of replacing the water heater! A guy doing plumbing “on the side” doesn’t know squat about real diagnosis of water heater problems where as a real plumber with many years of expertise would.
If you’re trying to save money and your toilet is clogged, or you have some leaky faucets which require new washers by all means call a friend, or find any person that calls himself a plumber, and has the tools to do the job, because those plumbing tasks are extremely basic. But don’t trust these people with your larger plumbing tasks like installing your new tankless water heater unless you want problems down the road.
Everyone needs to save money, and search for better deals now more than ever but don’t get yourself in trouble by hiring the wrong person, or plumber for the job.
Don’t let your general contractor “help you” save money by doing the plumbing him, or herself.
Don’t let some “handy man” do your plumbing.
Chances are they will charge you as much as a reputable plumbing company like our own Bruce Somers Plumbing would, but they will provide much lower quality workman ship.
Do you like the idea of ripping an entire shower down to the sub floor because your “plumber “, or guy doing a side job didn’t properly install the drain, or check the new shower valve for leaks before the walls get fished.
I can go on forever, but it’s not necessary. If you have a plumbing problem large or small do yourself a favor and get a free estimate from A REAL licensed plumber like us before or after you have met with other “quote unquote” people that do plumbing side jobs.
Good honesty plumbing advice could possibly save you thousands of dollars as it did for our client Kevin.
Please Read his lovely 100% real testimony he was nice enough to take the time to write us.

Honest information, at a great price!!
Bruce and Jay came to my home this evening because I believed (and was told by 2 previous companies) that I needed to replace my water heater. Much to my surprise (and my wallets pleasure!) they informed me that I do not need to replace the unit (yet) and that the fix is something simple that I could do myself!
This information was very refreshing as others have insisted that I need to spend a boatload of money to replace the water heater. I had received a few quotes to do so from these other companies, and the prices were very high. While Bruce and Jay were at my house, they gave me quote on a new Navien system because my water heater is 10 yrs. old and probably won’t last much longer. Their price was outstanding, and represented a significant savings over the quote I had received for the same exact install.
Thanks guys for exceeding my expectations without even doing any plumbing! I appreciate your help on several levels, not least of all the fact that you came to my house, on time, within 2 hours of my initial-afterhours phone call!
I will absolutely be calling you when the old system bites the dust!
Thank you so much!
This testimony blew us away. I admit that we encourage all our clients to send us some feed back, but in all honestly seldom do. Thank you Kevin for the kind words. We hope that heater doesn’t die for years, but when it does give us a call!
Providing honest information and fair prices is what we do.
Please let us give you a free estimate for your next plumbing project. I promise you won’t regret it.
