Plumbing & Heating Expo in Hartford CT, 2/20/10

Saturday 2/18 Hartford Connecticut. The Plumbing and Heating Expo show.
If you are in the water heating business (aka plumber, supplier,) or run an awesome site like this one. You were, or should have been in Hartford last Saturday for the plumbing and heating expo to learn all about the newest technology and water heating products offered today, and will be offered soon in the future. It was free to attend; free coffee & lunch were also included at no charge.

First I’d like to note that waterheatinginfo.com receives no funding/ money from any of the companies mentioned in this post. To be honest, we would like that to happen in the near future, and expect it too, but we will always share unbiased opinions & observations to the world about all the water heating products we can find to talk about.  If we’re happy with a product or manufacture from personal experiences, we’re going to talk about it in the site.   Some of the products shown at the expo had to do with heating air/ not water, so we’re not going to talk about that here. Other water heating companies were showing off commercial end products, again we are mostly into water heating products for homeowners on this site, so we’re not going to talk about those booths either.

Lets us begin….  The show went from 10am – 4pm, in the expo center in Hartford. We arrived at about 10:30 and the place was jamming with hundreds of product representatives, plumbing supply owners, plumbers, home owners, and members of the media there. Id say about a thousand people were there at any given time. We had two tickets in advance, but needed one more at the door. The expo’s system is vastly better than it was last year, because they had a new computer system and a lighting fast ticket printing machine. We breezed right in, and there were a bunch of pretty women at the front desk helping with the admissions- Nice.

There were many different water heating companies displaying their newest water heating units for 2010; AO Smith, Baxi, Buderus, Bradford white,Bock, Crown, Eternal, Honeywell , Unica, Laars, Navien, Rheem, Rudd, Rainnai, Mega-Stor , State, Takagi, Paloma, to name a few.

We wanted to start our walk at the Expo center with our friends at the Bender Plumbing’s both. They unveiled a motorcycle that’s made partly out of real plumbing parts. The bike’s builders was very creative and put a lot of time and energy into the creation. The Bender Motorcycle actually works, however, at the time it was a bit too loud for normal usage, so they couldn’t start it up. You can see me here with Max Bender in front of the Bender Motorcycle. It’s not quite finished yet, but Mark told me that it will be going back to the shop and will be road ready soon. It was pretty much the coolest, most unique thing at the expo in my opinion.

Rheem SolPak Active solar water heating systems

Rheem SolPak

Right next door was Rheem. The rep talked to us for a while about many different things. The new 95 series tanklesswater heater was one I remember. It’s a solid choice for a new continuous tankless installation at a great price point. What I was really excited about however, was the new solar water heating solutions they unveiled to the world. A new highly efficiency solar system that is fully integrated and packaged as an entire system, which fully qualifies for the federal $1,500 federal tax credits. This is a new thing that most solar companies offer, solar panels and other collectors, not a complete system, which is required by the new federal efficiency tax credit requirements for solar water heating systems.

The newest combination boiler from Baxi

Next we went to check out the booth at Baxi,. They had a nice set up for the trade show, which was a trailer complete with two Baxi units piped in as they would be in a real installation. The Baxi combie-boiler has an expansion tank, and a few other components built right in the tank, which saves money on parts and the labor to install them, which isn’t the case for most manufacturing companies in the combie-boiler business.

Laars Mini Therm Boiler

Laars Mini Therm Boiler

We then checked out the Laars both next. We had actually installed a few Laars Mini Therm boilers over the past couple winters. They are very small, provide a ton of heat, and are at a good price point. (Insider tip) Installers must read the installation diagram before installation, because the loop & location of expansion tank needs to be located as specifically stated in the diagram (which is different than most boiler manufacturing requirements!). So be careful installers!

We walked around and spoke to many people we recognized, one of which, being the owner of Main Plumbing supply in Bridgeport CT, other plumbers, and plumbing supply owners.

Lunch time. My mother always said if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. The hamburger and soda were free so I won’t complain.

After lunch, we walked to the far end of the expo center where I saw a beautiful woman. Not a bad way to start the second shift of information gathering! The women I spoke to at Yankee Gas was very nice to talk to, as well as pleasant and informative. Her job as a sales consultant is to first find out what gas suppliers are available for your area. If Yankees gas service is available in your area she would then set up an appointment to come out to the property to evaluate the amount of material (gas pipe) and labor it will take to get you hooked up. She will also calculate any costs associated with the new service installation, which is not always necessary, but occasionally is. If you need any help with converting to gas from oil, or an all electric system, call Yankee Gas. Okay….

New Navien Combi Boiler

New Navien Combi Boiler

Off to Navien’s booth. Over the past year, we have installed dozens of Navien tankless water heaters, and looked forward to meeting the Navien reps. Navien tankless water heaters are some of the best on Earth with the highest efficiency rating for those of you that don’t know. We talked about their new tankless combie-boiler coming out this spring, which will be able to provide hot water for entire houses, domestic, and all the radiant heating needed at a price other companies can’t touch. Here is a picture of me standing next to the new Navien combie-boiler. (with the cover off) I snapped a couple pictures, shook a few hands and we were off to the next one.

Honeywell True Steam Humidifier

Honeywell True Steam Humidifier

We stopped by Honeywell because they were displaying their True Steam humidifier for hot air heating systems, which we install a few every month. The True Steam instantaneously creates steam from the units cold water supplied to the unit. Steam is the best and only way to go these days. They work the best, needs the least amount of cleaning/maintenance, and because they inject actual steam into the duck work, there is no need to worry about mold growth, which is a possibility with cold water humidifiers. If you want to increase the humidity in your home or building, I recommend the Honeywell True Steam humidifier. There is also a Remote Kit available for the Honeywell True Steam, which allows you to mount the unit one area and run insulated piping to the duck work, which can be up to about 20 feet away. We’ve installed the True Steam twice with the remote installation kit and it worked perfectly.

Bock indirect water heater.

Bock indirect water heater.

We met a nice rep from Bock water heaters. Bock has been around for a long time and is the oil-fired heater of choice for most of our oil-fired water heater installations in CT. So we didn’t need to hear much, as we already knew quite a bit about their heaters, and they weren’t really unveiling anything new & exciting. We did talk about this website, and I told the gentleman to Google search oil-fired water heaters in CT, lol. Yep that’s us.

All and all, everyone I spoke to (about a hundred people) about their products and also told them about our websites. www.waterheatersgonewild.com and www.waterheatinginfo.com . Everyone seemed to be very excited about the website and said they were going to check it out. The site is pretty amazing with zero funding. I hope a water heating company in the near future sees the value of this site and our tremendously valuable users that range between 1,500 – 3,500 visits a day. We need money for new cameras, hosting fees, web development, future amazing audio & visual projects. Contact us today@ AMNindustries@yahoo.com
