Can I use an electric water heater as an indirect storage tank?

in Electric water heaters, Indirect, Storage tanks, Coils

In short Yes, you can also use a traditional gas water heater as well.

However…..

They are not designed for that so the tank will break down faster than they normally would, and the manufacturing companies know this, so  using a standard water heater will void it’’s original manufactures warranty.

Your better bet would be going with a real storage stank.  SuperStor is a high quality brand that comes in two versions, glass lined, and stainless steal lined.   The glass lines storage tank will last for about 10 – 15 years, it’ cost isn’t the lowest but the Superstor storage tank is probably the best for your money, based on a quality/ price point.  The Stainless steal lined tank from Supersor is regarded as the industry leader for indirect storage tanks.  They come with a life time warranty, however like anything else, you must pay for quality.  The stainless steal tanks go for around 1,100 – 1,300 dollars.  Boch, Lochinvar,  Mega store, and Rudd all offer high quality indirect storage tanks as well and are similarly priced.

Electric water heaters weren’t designed to handle water over 140 degrees, and older boilers may add water as hot as 180 into the tank, so it’s a good idea to add a thermostatic mixing valve to the supply side of the tank. It’s the only effective way to protect a thermostatic mixing valve.
