Looking for the “Mike Holmes of Plumbing”?

in Tips for Homeowners

Mike Homes is an incredible general contractor in Canada.  Some might say he is the best in the business, and even Hollywood has made him a star with his own award winning show about contracting “the right way”.

For those of you that don’t know, Mike Holmes is dead set on “doing the job right the first time”.    In his show on the HG TV network he saves home owners from contracting disasters.   All of his clients/ featured home owners on the show are victims of shotty workman ship, and Mike Holmes and his crew of primer trades men come to save the day.

Home owners like you are being taking advantage of every day by un licensed contractors, or licensed contractors that don’t take pride in there work, take short cuts, or simply don’t know what they are doing and shouldn’t even be licensed.

When selecting a plumbing contractor and any contractor for that matter you must do your home work.  Just because a guy calls himself a plumber and has a business card that unfortunately doesn’t mean the guy has any clue what he is doing.  Anyone can print up a business card and call themselves what ever they want.  Also many people are illegally using other peoples licenses for a fee, or plain just stealing the license number and printing it on there own cards.  Crazy yes, but very true.

I personally know a guy that owns a “plumbing company” that has zero experience in plumbing, he was an insurance adjuster, but wanted to own his own business so he printed some cards, paid a retired plumber a monthly fee to use his license number bought a couple used vans, and got an ad in the yellow pages and he was on his way.  Now I don’t expect his company to last long but it’s been a year and he is still in business, ripping off customers on a daily basis.

When you meet a contractor do yourself a big favor and Google Search the name on the card.  Then the company name.  Good or bad you should find something.   Hopefully a website with great pictures of the work they have done, and comments from real people they have performed the work for.  If you can’t find anything of substance.  Move on.  Would a successful contractor not have a website?   They should, in the age of the internet even if they don’t you certainly will still find some comments on a website, or message board some where.

For example.  Our in house plumber for Connecticut Bruce Somers has been a licensed plumber for 25 years.  He is “old school”  no yellow page ads, spends no money on traditional advertisement /marketing.   However if you Google search -Bruce Somers Plumbing-  you will see an incredible amount of info online.   It’s 2010 that’s the way it is.  If you can’t find any information about a contractor your thinking about using think again, he or she is a “part time” contractor as best.

If you have a serious plumbing problem and need the best plumber in the business you need to talk to Bruce Somers, of Bruce Somers plumbing.  It’s that simple so give us a call and Bruce will be over to solve your hard to solve plumbing  problems. He has watched every episode of Mike Holmes a few times and emulates his approach which is getting things done correct the first time with no short cuts.
