Pictured above is a picture of a car that travels 12,000 mile per year at 22 miles per gallon.
We also have a 50 gallon electric water that’s electrically heating 90 gallons of water a day.
In this comparison the water heater uses slightly more energy, but this is only on 90 gallons being used per day. Average water usage for families in America is 94,000 gallon of water a year. Which breaks down to about 250 gallons of water per day. Half of which at least would most likely be hot water. With this additional information you can see that your old tank style hot water heater could easily be using more energy than your family car is.
note: This picture is a couple years old, and it’s from CA which has the most expensive energy in America, however we are based in Connecitcut which has the 2nd or 3rd highest energy prices in the country over all as of 2008 so this picture is very relative for our area as well.
